Well-earned points in solid drive beneath the Italian sun

Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team driver, Lance Stroll, climbed from P13 to finish ninth, claiming two points for the team at the 2024 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

The team applied updates to the car upon their return to the legendary Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari following last year's cancellation. Subsequently, the weekend’s first Practice session consisted of Lance and the team working to collect data.

Lance finished FP1 in P12.

Continuing their data collection, Lance and the team tested many different elements as they worked on assessing updates. He ended the weekend’s second Practice session in P13 with lots of data to study overnight.

It was a warm session underneath the Italian sunshine, meaning teams were able to assess the effect of tyre degradation on the softer tyre compounds. However, two red flags during the session impacted the amount of Practice time.

Ultimately, Lance finished the session in P9 with a fastest time of 1:16.543.

Qualifying

Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari can be a tricky track for overtaking, so Qualifying result and track position can be key heading into the Grand Prix.

In the first Qualifying segment, Lance set his initial lap on Soft tyres. He came out again with less than four minutes to go, heading out before most other drivers to set a time that placed him P13 and through to Q2.

Lance set an initial lap at the start of Q2 before going out for another lap with less than two minutes to go. While he was up on all sectors, unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get through to Q3, meaning he lined up for the Grand Prix from P13.

Grand Prix

Throughout the Grand Prix, Lance showed solid pace as he climbed from P13 on the grid to finish ninth, securing two important points for the team.

Starting on Medium tyres, Lance spent the first few laps of the race battling with Esteban Ocon for P12. He was able to make the move stick on Lap 10.

On his first stint of the race using the Medium tyre compound, Lance ran further than most.

At the end of Lap 37, Lance pitted from P8 for Hard tyres. He came out in P13. As a result of this later pit, Lance had much fresher tyres than the drivers around him during the closing stages of the Grand Prix.

On Lap 44, Lance was P11 and chasing after the points positions. Taking advantage of his fresher tyres, he executed some excellent overtakes to maximise his race and elevate him into the points.

Overtaking Nico Hülkenberg, Lance claimed P10. After a show of great pace, he then began to eye up P9 and, with an overtake on Lap 51, secured a higher points position.

Lance finished the race in P9, having started P13.

His season will continue on May 24-26 with the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll, Aston Martin Aramco F1®️ driver, said:

It's good to come away from Imola with a couple of points. We elected to extend our first stint on the Medium compounds hoping for a Safety Car, but that never came and so we had to make up positions on track.

That early tyre management meant I had the advantage of newer Hards towards of the end of the race, giving me the pace to pass Nico [Hülkenberg] and Yuki [Tsunoda] which was fun. This weekend has been tough though. We know we're not as competitive as we want to be, and we'll have to push hard to find the performance we're missing.
