Tough day at the Temple of Speed

Lance finished P19 in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix after starting from P17.

Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team driver, Lance Stroll, finished P19 in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, where he’d previously placed P16.

Disrupted FP1

The weekend’s Free Practice sessions would be crucial as the track had been newly resurfaced. Lance began the session on the Medium tyre, but 10 minutes in a Red Flag impacted running.

FP1 resumed with 35 minutes on the clock and Lance went out on another set of Medium tyres.

Towards the end of the session, Lance pitted and swapped to the Soft compound for his final stint.

He finished FP1 in P16.

Top ten in FP2

Conditions had cooled slightly compared to FP1. Lance began on Mediums, and his first flying lap was quicker than his time set in the first session.

To get some Qualifying runs under his belt, Lance made a pit stop for the Soft compound. He was able to set a time that put him in P6.

A second Red Flag of the day came out halfway through the session. FP2 resumed with 18 minutes to go.

Lance was able to collect some more data on the Medium and Soft compound tyres before the session finished.

He ended FP2 in P10.

Conditions on track were similar to Friday and Lance set a time on the Soft compound which put him P15.

After pitting again, Lance came out towards the end of the session and retained the P15 spot.

Early exit in Qualifying

Opting to stay in the pits at the start of the session, Lance came out with 11 minutes on the clock in Q1 on Softs. His first flying lap put him in P8 before he pitted for another set of Softs.

As the session was drawing to a close, Lance was near to the drop zone and went out for another lap.

Lance was up a few tenths on his final lap, but a call for a yellow flag meant he had to back out of the lap and was eliminated in Q1 in P17.

Difficult day at the Italian Grand Prix

Lance started the race from P17 on the Hard tyre. He made positions up in the opening laps and was sitting in P14 by Lap 11.

As those around him began to pit early he had broken in the top ten on Lap 15.

He made his first pit stop at the end of Lap 20 for another set of Hard tyres, meaning he would need to stop again.

Lance continued to make progress throughout the field before his second stop for Mediums on Lap 37 where he rejoined in P16.

A third stop came for Lance on Lap 51 for the Soft tyre to try and take the fastest lap.

Ultimately, he concluded the race in P19.

His season will continue on 13-15 September with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll, Aston Martin Aramco F1® driver, said:

Today’s result was more or less what we expected. We haven’t had the pace to challenge all weekend, and we knew there wasn’t going to be much we could do from P17. We went into the race open to a one or two-stop strategy but elected to stop twice when we saw the levels of tyre degradation. We then stopped for a third time at the end to try and take the fastest lap. Ultimately, we know we’re missing the performance we need, and the focus remains on trying to bring that to the car.
