Penalty from USGP means Lance starts at the back in Mexico

It was a Saturday to forget for the birthday boy, as he struggled to get his car out of Q1 in qualifying.

Lance had a steady run of laps in Free Practice Three on Saturday afternoon in Mexico, starting his run on the Medium compound tyres.

After putting in a best lap time of 1:21.413 in an eight-lap run, he returned to the pits.

Coming back out on Softs with 12 minutes left on the clock, he improved on his time to a 1:20.477, leaving him in 16th position as the session came to a close, with 20 laps completed.

Qualifying was no better for Lance, as he hit the track on the Soft compound. Managing a best time of 1:20.761 on his first run with two flying laps on that set.

With his second set of Soft tyres, Lance did two preparation laps for his final run. He improved in the first and second sectors on his previous best, but he was only able to get himself up to 18th with a time of 1.20.520.

Following on from his collision with Alpine’s Fernando Alonso at the United States Grand Prix one week ago, a post-race penalty of three grid places for Lance means he will be starting the Mexico City Grand Prix from 20th place.

“We have really struggled for grip and balance here, which is why we are down the order this weekend. We have tried several things yesterday and today, but it has not turned our fortunes around. From our starting position, it is going to be a challenge to get into the points tomorrow. However, it is a long race, we perform better in those conditions, and we know that anything can happen.”
