There was a delay to cars leaving the pit lane for FP1 due to standing water that needed to be cleared. This, along with a red flag, limited running and resulted in drivers recording a small number of laps.
Inconsistent conditions in FP2 meant Lance went out on both slick and Intermediate tyres, giving Lance and Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team a chance to learn more about tyre behaviour and the circuit’s new tarmac. He finished the session in third.
Clearer weather conditions in FP3 meant it was the first real slick-tyre running of the weekend. Concluding the weekend’s Practice sessions, Lance classified fourth.
A brief shower prior to Qualifying washed away the circuit’s rubber. As a result, track evolution was high throughout the session.
Despite the tricky weather conditions throughout the weekend, Qualifying remained dry. Lance began Qualifying well, setting a time that saw him classify P10 and through to Q2.
He placed P10 once again in Q2, safely into the final segment of Qualifying.
Lance began Q3 on used Softs. After first runs, Lance was P6. He then went out to set another lap and finished the session in P9, his best Canadian Qualifying result in Formula One, putting him in a good position to score points in the Grand Prix.
A rainy start to the Grand Prix meant Lance began the race on Intermediates. Starting from P9, he made up a place on the opening lap.
A Safety Car period on Lap 25 allowed Lance to make a pit for new Intermediate tyres. Following the end of the Safety Car, he restarted the Grand Prix in P8.
As the track began to dry up, Lance pitted at the end of Lap 44 for Hards and came back out in P8.
Having successfully navigated the changing conditions, Lance finished his home Grand Prix in seventh, picking up six points in a double-points finish for the team.
His season will continue on June 21-23 with the Spanish Grand Prix.
Lance Stroll, Aston Martin Aramco F1®️ driver, said:
"I'm super happy with our performance today. It was a tricky race - one of the trickiest I can remember - and the changing conditions kept us on our toes, but we handled it well.
"The first stint was really about managing tyres, especially as the track began to dry, and then we were able to pit for another set of Intermediates under the Safety Car for the second round of rain. We judged the switch to the Hard compound well and kept it on track while others struggled.
"The characteristics of this circuit definitely suited our car, but we did a good job to stay focused and make the most of the opportunities that came our way."
