Lance narrowly misses out on points at Spa-Francorchamps

Lance finished P11 in the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix after starting from P15.

Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team driver, Lance Stroll, finished P11 in the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, where he'd previously placed ninth in 2023.

Free Practice

Since part of the track had recently been resurfaced, it was important for Lance and the team to gather as much information as possible on how the different tyre compounds reacted.

Lance initially began FP1 on Hards before later switching to Softs. As well as learning information about the track, Free Practice was also an opportunity for Lance to learn more about the updates that had been applied to the AMR24 in Hungary. Because of this, Lance used all three dry tyre compounds on Friday.

In FP2, Lance was keen to get more data in dry conditions due to the mixed forecast predicted for Saturday’s sessions. He finished FP2 in P11.

The following day, poor weather affected the weekend’s final Free Practice. Unfortunately, this led to Lance having an incident in the wet conditions.

Qualifying

The team worked on repairing Lance’s car ahead of Qualifying and were able to have it ready for the start of the session.

The rain stopped before Qualifying, but wet track conditions meant all drivers opted for Intermediates, with more rain expected later in the hour-long session.

With five minutes to go in Q1, Lance began a lap and initially went seventh. After he set another lap and more drivers set times, Lance ended Q1 in P15.

Lance was on Intermediates again during Q2. He began his final lap of the session with just over two minutes to go. While he improved on his middle sector, he finished Qualifying in P15.

Grand Prix

Back in warmer, dry conditions, Lance began the Belgian Grand Prix from P15 on Mediums. He got away well and was chasing P14.

After drivers ahead of him pitted, Lance was up to P7 by Lap 12, when Lance also went into the pits for Hard tyres. He returned to the track in P19.

Shortly after, Lance overtook Logan Sargeant for P18 and made good pace on his new tyres.

As tyre degradation was lower than expected, Lance was able to opt for a one-stop strategy. Due to this and solid pace from Lance, he finished just outside of the top 10.

His season will continue on 23-25 August with the Dutch Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll, Aston Martin Aramco F1® driver, said:

"It became clear during the race that the tyre degradation was lower than expected, so we elected to go for the one-stop strategy. We were running in P10 a few laps from the end of the race, but by that point I was struggling with the tyres and didn't have the speed to hold position. We were missing the pace we needed to fight for more today. As a team, I think we still have a lot of work to do to do catch back up to the top four teams."
