Lance has a tough Sprint weekend in Austria

Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team driver, Lance Stroll, finished P13 in the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, where he'd previously placed ninth in 2023.

Free Practice

As the weekend’s sole Free Practice session, FP1 was a chance for Lance and the team to learn as much as possible ahead of the Sprint sessions.

After gathering information on the Hard tyre, a brief red flag interrupted the session. Following this, Lance came back onto the track on a set of Soft tyres and set the fastest first sector of the session.

Lance finished FP1 in P7.

Sprint Qualifying

Lance’s first lap of SQ1 was strong, resulting in him safely getting through to SQ2 in P5.

With four minutes to go in SQ2, Lance headed out of the pits to set his first lap. While he was on a solid lap, a slide in the final corner impacted him and he ultimately finished outside of the top 10, in P12.

Sprint

Starting from P12, Lance opted for Mediums in the third Sprint of 2024. He had a strong start, overtaking both Alpines in the opening stages to secure P10, which is where he finished the Sprint.

Qualifying

Lance set an early lap in Q1 before coming back out for another lap later in the session.

With less than three minutes of Q1 to go, Lance headed out of the garage to set another lap. After a challenging session with fine margins, Lance qualified P17, just 0.556 seconds off P1.

Grand Prix

For Round 11 of the 2024 Formula One World Championship, Lance started from P17 on Mediums.

As other drivers began to pit around him, Lance had moved up to P10 just before pitting at the end of Lap 20.

Switching to Medium tyres, Lance came back onto the track in P17.

On Lap 26, Lance overtook Zhou Guanyu for P16. As more drivers pitted, he moved up to P13.

On Lap 39, Lance battled against Alex Albon for P12. After Lance initially overtook him, the pair briefly switched back before Lance made the move stick and secured P12.

At the end of Lap 44, Lance pitted for Hards and came back out in P16. Soon after, he overtook Yuki Tsunoda for P15.

Later in the race, Lance battled against Albon once again and overtook him to secure P13.

In the end, after managing his tyres well, Lance finished the Austrian Grand Prix in P13.

His season will continue on July 5-7 with the British Grand Prix.

I got caught up in some contact on the opening lap of the race but managed to avoid damage. From that point on, my afternoon was mainly about managing tyres to make a two-stop strategy work. I made a few overtakes, but we were lacking the pace to make much impact to our finishing positions. It's been a difficult weekend; we're in a run of races that don't suit our car, so there's a lot of work to do.
