Lance finishes P10 in Hungary

Lance placed P10 in Hungary, picking up a hard-earned point.

Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team driver, Lance Stroll, finished P10 in the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, where he'd previously placed P10 in 2023.

Free Practice

In the Hungarian heat, the team ran comparison tests between Lance, who was using the Silverstone spec of the car, and team-mate Fernando Alonso who was using the team’s new updates.

Lance began FP1 on Hard tyres and later switched to Softs to continue analysing data. He finished the session in P9, having set the fastest first sector.

Ahead of FP2, the new updates were applied to Lance’s car. He started the session on Medium tyres before a Red Flag came out.

Following the Red Flag, just under 30 minutes remained in the session. Lance came back out on Softs and finished P17.

In the weekend’s final Free Practice session, Lance began by running a heat cycle through a set of Hards. He then switched to Mediums, and later Softs, to continue his analysis of the new updates ahead of Qualifying.

Qualifying

Rain hit just before Qualifying, but the warmer temperatures in Budapest meant that the track dried up enough for Lance to opt for Softs, with more rain expected later in the session.

Following a Red Flag and more rain, Lance had one flying lap to get himself through to the second phase of Qualifying. Setting personal bests in all sectors, Lance got safely through in P7.

In Q2, Lance set another strong time and got through to the final Qualifying segment in P6.

Since the second half of Q3 was predicted to be affected by rain, Lance came back onto the track for an early lap.

After all the drivers had set times, Lance was P8 and looking to improve. He came back out with just over three minutes to go, but a Red Flag interrupted the session, ultimately resulting in Lance qualifying eighth.

Hungarian Grand Prix

The team had saved a set of Softs for Lance, which he chose to use to begin the race. By Lap 12, he was the last driver on the Soft tyres and was still setting decent times.

Pitting from P7 at the end of Lap 14, Lance rejoined the track in P16 on Medium tyres.

Following this, Lance had a series of strong overtakes, first on Kevin Magnussen for P15. Two laps later, he passed Alex Albon.

By Lap 27, Lance was looking to overtake Nico Hülkenberg. He made the move on Lap 28 and successfully moved into P12.

At the end of Lap 45, Lance pitted from P9. He switched to Hards and rejoined in P14.

Towards the end of the race, Lance made more overtakes and finished the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix in P10, picking up a hard-earned point.

His season will continue on 26-28 July with the Belgian Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll, Aston Martin Aramco F1® driver, said:

It was a difficult race for us. I don't think we optimised the strategy and we were not competitive enough. We struggled with tyre degradation, too. We've got a lot of work to do as a team ahead of the next round. Spa is a very different track, so hopefully that suits our car more.
