The Canadian lined up on the Hard tyres and made up two positions when the race got underway before losing a place to the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.
A technical issue for Carlos Sainz Jr. brought out the Virtual Safety Car on lap nine of the 51 and allowed Lance to move up to 14th.
Battling against Zhou Guanyu and Magnussen, the trio traded places in the fight for 14th before Lance dropped back into 16th place.
Making the most of the most durable tyre compound, Lance eventually pitted on lap 30 to switch onto the Mediums and rejoined in 14th ahead of Mick Schumacher.
Unfortunately, a mechanical issue forced Lance to retire his AMR22 on lap 48 which brought his afternoon to an early end.
Despite this, Lance was still classified in 16th position.

“It is a shame that we had to retire the car. The engineers could see the car was suffering from a vibration issue, so they asked me to retire the car. We are still not quite sure what the problem was, so we will have to do some work over the next week to investigate it and fix things. Sebastian proved our car has the pace, so hopefully we can come back stronger for my home race in Canada next week, which I am really looking forward to.”
