Lance spent the weekend’s Free Practice sessions gathering valuable data and finetuning the car ahead of Qualifying. He finished FP1 and FP2 in P7, before classifying P15 in the weekend’s final Free Practice session.
After setting his first lap of Qualifying, Lance was P7 in Q1. He headed back out to set another strong lap which resulted in him safely progressing to Q2 in P9.
Lance hit some traffic during his final flying lap of Q2, losing of a couple of tenths. This resulted in him finishing the weekend’s Qualifying session in P14.
Lance began the race from P13 and opted for Hard tyres. On the opening lap, he made up a place before a Red Flag was brought out.
Switching to Medium tyres under the Red Flag, Lance restarted the Grand Prix from P11. He then worked on managing his tyres throughout the race.
At the end of lap 42, Lance pitted for Hard tyres. Team-mate Fernando Alonso was running behind Lance and had been working on building a gap, allowing Lance to pit without losing any positions. As a result, Lance came back out P11 and was eyeing up the top 10.
On lap 49, an unfortunate puncture affected Lance’s race. He made it to the pits for a set of Softs and rejoined in P16.
Using the Soft tyres to work his way through the pack, Lance overtook Zhou Guanyu on Lap 57, shortly followed by Logan Sargeant on Lap 58.
His season will continue on June 7-9 with the Canadian Grand Prix.
Lance Stroll, Aston Martin Aramco F1®️ driver, said:
"I think we always expected the race to be about managing the tyres so that was no surprise, especially after the restart. You need a big delta to overtake here so we did what we could with the strategy. I had a gap over Pierre [Gasly] so we pitted for Hard tyres to try and race him in the second half of the Grand Prix.
"In the end it didn't work out so we missed out on scoring a point. This weekend was not the easiest and shows we need to find some more pace."
